Puerto Rican Rice and BeansPuerto Rican Rice and Beans (Arroz y Habichuelas) are a must try when in Puerto Rico and super easy to make at home.

What you will need:

Puerto Rican Rice and Beans

  • Olive Oil
  • 1/2 cup Ham (Cocina Jamon), chopped into small cubes
  • 2 Garlic Cloves, minced or chpped fine
  • 2 tablespoons Sofrito sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Recaito
  • 1 (15 oz) can Pink Beans (or use Habichuelas Colorado – red Kidney Beans)
  • 1 cup Water
  • 1/4 cup Tomato Sauce
  • 1 envelopegoya Sazon con Culantro y Achiote
  • 1/4 teaspoon Oregano
  • Ssmall Potato, peeled and cut into chunks (optional)
  • Small amount of chopped Pumpkin (same size as potatoe) (optional)
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
  • Cooked White Rice

Directions:

Puerto Rican Rice and Beans

  • Heat the oil in saucepan on medium
  • Add the ham and sauté for about 5 minutes until it starts to brown
  • Add the Sofrito, Recaito and garlic and cook for another 5 minutes
  • Add the beans, water, tomato sauce, sazon, potato and pumpkin and stir
  • Bring to a boil and then reduce the heat to a simmer
  • Cover the pot and cook for 30 minutes or until the potatoes are cooked and the beans and sauce have thickened
  • Serve with hot rice
